When people first get a CDL-A, the goal is usually simple: learn the job, get comfortable behind the wheel, and gain experience as they are just starting out.But driving careers rarely stay the same for long.
What a driver wants from the job in year one might look different at year five. And by the time someone has a decade or more behind the wheel, that experienced driver’s needs might change again.
That’s part of the idea behind Roehl’s Start. Drive. Grow. Thrive. philosophy. Wherever you are in your driving career, Roehl is here to help you. Here’s what “thriving” can look like at different points along the road.
Start Learning the Job and Finding Your Rhythm
The first year of a CDL-A career is about building habits. New drivers are learning how to manage time, navigate unfamiliar places, plan parking, and handle the daily responsibilities that come with the job. The focus isn’t on maximizing every mile yet — it’s on becoming comfortable with the work itself.
For many drivers at Roehl, that first stage begins with earning a CDL through Roehl’s on-the-job Get Your CDL program or finishing their training at a CDL program. In both cases, the next step is to get on the road with a Certified Driver Trainer. And Roehl does this differently than most carriers.
During this time, drivers are typically focused on:
Building experience with real freight and real schedules
Learning how different shippers and receivers operate
Understanding how to plan trips and manage hours of service
Developing a working relationship with their fleet manager
It’s the stage where the job becomes familiar — and where drivers start figuring out what parts of trucking they enjoy most.
Driving Skills Forward
Once drivers have a few years of experience, the job usually feels very different than it did at the beginning. The fundamentals are second nature.
This is often the point where drivers start asking a new question: What do I want this job to look like long term? Some drivers begin exploring different types of freight. Roehl operates several major divisions, including:
Dry Van
Flatbed
Refrigerated
Curtainside
Dedicated fleets
A driver might start in one division and later decide they want to try something different. Moving into a new type of freight can add variety to the work while building a broader skillset. For drivers who want to keep developing their skills without leaving the company, those options make a difference.
Growing a Career that Balances Life
At this stage, most drivers know exactly what parts of the job work for them — and what doesn’t. Schedules that made sense early in a career may not fit the same way years later, family responsibilities change, and personal priorities shift. Sometimes drivers simply want a different rhythm to their weeks.
Roehl offers several route and home time structures that allow drivers to adjust their schedule as life changes, including:
OTR routes with flexible home time (typically 11–14 days out with several days home)
Regional and dedicated fleets with weekly home time
HOMEtime PLUS™ schedules, such as 7/7, 7/4, or 7/3.
Home Daily local positions, typically based out of terminals
Some HOMEtime PLUS fleets can provide up to 26 weeks off per year. For drivers who want to stay on the road while spending more time at home, those structures allow careers to evolve without stepping away from trucking entirely.
Thriving Beyond the Wheel
As drivers gain confidence and experience, many startthinking about the long-term shape of their career. For some, that means continuing to drive while choosing freight and schedules that fit their lifestyle best. Other drivers become interested in the business side of trucking.
Roehl’s B.O.S.S. program (Business Ownership Support System) was created for those drivers who want to transition from company driver to owner operator. The program includes:
Business ownership training through Roehl Youniversity
Guidance on business structure and forming an LLC through legal partners
Lease-purchase opportunities
Business advisors who help drivers focus on loads that support their business goals
Drivers with at least one year of experience may also participate in Roehl’s Earned Down Payment Program, where they begin as company drivers while completing owner operator coursework and may become eligible to transition into a truck with an earned down payment.
For drivers interested in running their own truck, that structure provides a way to learn the business before stepping fully into ownership.
Success Looks Different for Every Driver
Some drivers spend their entire career hauling the same type of freight in the same fleet, while others move through several divisions or fleets over the years. Some drivers stay over-the-road full-time, while others eventually move into fleets that keep them closer to home or get them home more. Others become certified driver trainers or even instructors to help new drivers gain more experience in the trucking industry.
What thriving looks like isn’t the same for everyone — but most long driving careers share one thing in common: the ability to keep moving forward without constantly starting over. That’s why Roehl is for every mile of a truck driver’s career.
Drivers can begin their career here, build experience across different freight types and schedules, grow into new opportunities, and shape the job around the life they want outside the truck.
